The Whale theatre in Greystones, is a great example of the famous “build it and they will come” mantra.
Since opening its doors in 2017, the theatre has its stage graced by fantastic acts such as HotHouse Flowers, Phelim Drew, Declan O’Rourke, Maria Doyle-Kennedy, Rebecca Storm and many more artists.
But it was clear from the start that Ross McParland, the ower, wanted to create something that was more accessible to everyone in the community. And so it became the home of the Greystones Players, “a non-profit community drama group that aims to bring people together from Greystones and environs to work collaboratively…”
The theatre has also been the venue for Battle of the Bands, Opera (live streaming), Comedy Club and even the Royal Wedding (televised).
Paul Byrne, of the Greystones Guide, has been at the helm of the film club that shows has shown classics such as Milos Forman’s “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” and beautiful Irish Movies such as Ken Wardrop “Making the Grade”.
Paul occasionally has the director and/or actor participating to a Q&A before the movie, as was the case for Ken Wardrop recently…
This is also a great example of putting community before greed..
